The Physics Department falls under the natural, mathematical, and biomedical sciences division within Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. Physics graduate students master sophisticated physics principles, covering topics like advanced mechanics, electromagnetic theory, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics, complemented by mathematical physics techniques and computational physics.
Elective courses explore quantum field theory, solid-state physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and biophysics. A key program component engages students in cutting-edge research initiatives. Those pursuing experimental, observational, or applied physics benefit from our partnerships with global laboratories, providing practical training and opportunities for innovative research.
Research partnerships connect the department with scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, NASA, and various international institutions. Specializations offered include nuclear physics, astrophysics, condensed-matter physics, and interdisciplinary fields like materials science and biophysics.
Note that the MS Physics program typically offers partial tuition support only.
