The College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Physics and Astronomy provides academic programs and research opportunities primarily leading to a Ph.D. Students can earn an M.A. either as a final degree or while progressing toward their doctorate. Those focused on research equipment can pursue the Master of Science in Scientific Instrumentation. For aspiring high school physics teachers, the School of Professional Development offers a Master of Arts in Teaching program. The department collaborates with other Stony Brook programs like Medical Physics, Chemical Physics, Atmospheric and Climate Modeling, and Materials Science, as well as Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, offering additional specialized study options.

Qualification Requirements
A. A bachelor's degree in physics or a closely related field from an accredited institution. In the case of the M.Sc. in Quantum Information Science and Technology the degree must be in science and engineering, but need not be in physics or a closely related field.
B. A minimum grade average of B in all undergraduate coursework, and B or better in the sciences and mathematics.
C. Acceptance by the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Graduate School.
In special cases, a student not meeting requirement A (or, in unusual cases, requirement B) may be admitted on a provisional basis, without financial support. Upon admission, the student will be informed of the requirements that must be satisfied for termination of provisional status.
An applicant must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale.
IELTS: Overall score of 6.5, with no subsection recommended to be below 6
TOEFL: 80 for Master's level
