Nestled within the College of Humanities and Social Science, the School of Integrative Studies (SIS) leads the way in interdisciplinary education, combining research, theory, and practical applications from diverse fields. As Virginia's sole provider of an integrative studies degree—and one of only a handful nationwide—the school crafts courses that encourage real-world application. Students benefit from intimate class settings that foster dialogue, teamwork, and hands-on experiences through community initiatives, volunteer work, field studies, internships, and faculty-led research tackling pressing societal issues.
Our distinguished faculty specialize in integrative approaches to law, social justice, human rights, childhood development, and environmental sustainability. Academic advisors and professors guide students in discovering opportunities to expand their educational horizons. The program provides extensive concentration options or the flexibility to create a personalized curriculum.
By collaborating with other departments, SIS delivers accelerated degree tracks and cross-disciplinary minors. We motivate students to venture into unfamiliar subjects while developing career-ready expertise. By applying classroom knowledge to actual problems, graduates emerge as capable, self-assured professionals ready to create meaningful change in their chosen fields.
