George Mason University's School of Art fosters a collaborative environment where students and professionals explore creativity across traditional and emerging media within diverse social settings. Grounded in the belief that art both mirrors and shapes society, the school champions artistic expression as a means to improve lives while envisioning future possibilities. We emphasize artists' vital role in this dialogue, encouraging students to view art as both personal expression and public engagement. Our programs honor artistic heritage, contemporary significance, and bold experimentation—prioritizing innovative approaches that amplify art's influence on societal progress.
The School of Art provides undergraduate studio programs leading to either a bachelor of arts (BA) or bachelor of fine arts (BFA), with an honors track available for exceptional AVT majors. Students can also pursue minors in art and visual technology, arts and social change, graphic design, photography, or web design.
Prospective art educators should note that neither the BA nor BFA alone fulfills public school teaching certification requirements. Those pursuing teaching careers are strongly advised to explore the accelerated master of art in teaching pathway and consult with the school's art education advisor regarding licensure preparation.
