The B.A. in Theatre with a Lighting Design and Technology Concentration includes courses like Drawing for Theatre, Computer Assisted Drafting for Theatre, two levels of lighting design classes, Projection Design, Design Portfolio and Professional Prep. Students must also study additional design disciplines (such as projection, sound, costume, or set design) to gain a deeper appreciation for the collaborative process of stage production. Practical experience is gained through practicum courses where students apply their design knowledge by working on department productions or live event design teams.
Beyond the general CSU Theatre Program Learning Objectives, this concentration focuses on these specialized goals:
LIGHTING DESIGN and TECHNOLOGY FOR THEATRE, FILM, and INDUSTRY: Master the specialized methods lighting designers employ to conceptualize and convey their visions. This involves research, integrating skills like drafting, digital pre-visualization, automated lighting programming, and adopting new technologies while understanding the lighting designer's role in creative teamwork.
DESIGN ARTISTRY: Cultivate the Lighting Designer's dual role as both creative partner and technical expert. Through hands-on practice in organization, design, and technical execution, students learn to bring productions from initial concept to final performance while compiling a professional portfolio of design and technical work.
