These programs expand upon students' undergraduate studies in history or related social science disciplines. What sets them apart is their robust hands-on training and well-structured curriculum that moves from foundational concepts and instructional techniques to creating a professional teaching portfolio.
During the first academic year's fall and spring terms, participants spend three full days weekly in classrooms: three weeks of observation followed by ten weeks of student teaching in the same setting.
In the second year, the commitment increases to five full days weekly: two weeks of observation followed by twelve weeks of student teaching in the same classroom environment.
Successful completion results in a Master of Science in Teaching degree and qualifies graduates for initial teaching certification in New York State.
Participants who fulfill all program requirements, complete the coursework, and demonstrate competency in field experiences earn Fordham University's recommendation for New York State initial certification in their chosen teaching specialization.
