The Department of Anthropology invites graduate students pursuing master's degrees to explore diverse fields including archaeology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology. Our faculty specialize in research across multiple regions including the Southeastern U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, Mesoamerica, and Australia. Students can engage in academic studies and hands-on research spanning various disciplines such as ancient and modern archaeology, marine archaeology, geological archaeology, animal bone analysis, cultural anthropology, visual ethnography, documentary production, Indigenous studies, and skeletal biology.
Florida State University's Anthropology Department serves as the base for the Southeast Archeological Center (SEAC), conducting archaeological investigations and managing artifacts from National Park Service sites across the Southeast, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. SEAC's extensive collection contains over three million artifacts dating from early Native American cultures to modern times. The department shares facilities with SEAC at Innovation Park, located near the university's primary campus.

Tallahassee's status as Florida's capital positions the Department of State here, overseeing the state's cultural heritage. This includes managing the Florida Master Site File, Archaeological Research Bureau, Historic Places Registry, and Folk Arts initiatives. Both federal and state agencies like the U.S. Forest Service and State Parks maintain local offices, alongside numerous private heritage preservation companies. Anthropology students regularly secure practical training and jobs with these organizations. Hands-on learning opportunities exist in land/water archaeology, biological anthropology, crime scene analysis, cultural studies, and media production. Cross-disciplinary options include Geographic Information Systems (Geography Department), digital forensics (Scientific Computing), museum management (Art History), ancient Mediterranean studies (Classics Department), world music studies (Music School), global education (Education College), and the Museum Studies program (Fine Arts College).
