The Department of Anthropology provides a Master of Arts graduate program in Anthropology. Students pursuing this degree can specialize in either archaeology or sociocultural anthropology. Both tracks combine academic coursework, research instruction, and thesis development to enhance students' knowledge in these anthropological disciplines. We encourage applications from individuals with diverse research interests spanning anthropology's various specialties.
The program specializes in studying the origins and evolution of hunter-gatherer societies and early agricultural communities in the western U.S., along with advanced civilizations in Mesoamerica and the Near East. Its key advantage lies in the wide array of research possibilities available to students, spanning North America's Great Basin and Southwest regions, as well as Mesoamerica and the Near East. Students may access museum internship opportunities both locally and elsewhere. Yearly archaeology field schools concentrate on teaching surveying and excavation techniques, with particular attention to thorough documentation, solving fieldwork challenges through guided practical experience, analyzing data, and presenting results. Instead of focusing on narrow specialties, the program prepares graduates with fundamental skills for professional archaeology careers, advanced Ph.D. studies, public archaeology positions, or museum employment.
