The Real Estate and Economic Development specialization examines how public sector initiatives and planning approaches can stimulate private investment for sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Our goal is to craft and execute development strategies that improve living standards for current and future residents.
Students in this program will acquire: the expertise to become planners, policy consultants, and economic developers who assist communities in job creation, business attraction, and fostering innovation through social capital development,
core principles of land development and their application in promoting socially conscious projects like affordable housing and mixed-use developments,
negotiation techniques for public-private partnerships and community-led development initiatives to optimize public benefits, methods for conducting planning assessments, creating data-driven economic strategies, and adapting approaches to diverse political and cultural environments, collaborative skills to work with specialists in land use, transportation, and environmental planning to advance local development goals. These competencies are valuable in both domestic and international contexts, equipping graduates for diverse career opportunities worldwide.
The Ph.D. program in Urban and Regional Planning prepares scholars for teaching, research, and service focused on building resilient communities and ecosystems that support human potential, equity, sustainable living, and public welfare. Faculty research explores: Aging Population Planning, Health and Community Resilience, Urban Transportation and Land Use, Sustainable Development, Environmental Collaboration, Neighborhood Transformation, and Global Settlement Patterns. With small cohort sizes (typically 3-5 new doctoral students annually) and favorable faculty-student ratios, we facilitate close academic partnerships.
