The English Graduate Program provides Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree options. M.A. candidates can specialize in either Literature, Media, and Culture or Rhetoric and Composition tracks. The M.F.A. focuses on Creative Writing. Those pursuing an M.A. in Literature, Media, and Culture must complete the Professional Writing Capstone Course (ENG 5971). Rhetoric and Composition students have the choice between writing a thesis or completing a portfolio exam. Creative Writing students submit a creative portfolio as their thesis.

Ph.D. candidates fulfill foundational requirements in literature, language studies, and literary theory before taking comprehensive exams and writing dissertations in specialized areas. These include Medieval and Early Modern British Literary and Cultural Studies (pre-1660), British and Irish Literary and Cultural Studies (1660-1900), Post-1900 Literary and Cultural Studies (American, British, Irish), American Literary and Cultural Studies (pre-1900), African-American Literary and Cultural Studies, History of Text Technologies, Feminism, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Colonial, Postcolonial, and Transnational Literary and Cultural Studies, and Publishing and Editing. (A unique aspect of Florida State's Ph.D. program allows students to submit creative works for their dissertation.)
