The Photography and Moving Image program cultivates personal artistic vision as students investigate modern applications, methods, and concepts shaping photography and film across both tangible and digital realms. The program provides classes that cover both conventional and digital techniques while emphasizing the historical context and theoretical foundations of these mediums. Situated within a broadly interdisciplinary department, the program motivates students to connect their photographic and cinematic studies with knowledge gained from other disciplines. Those working toward BA/BFA or MFA degrees frequently combine their expertise in photography, video, and animation with other artistic forms like printmaking, sculpture, digital art, or painting. This cross-disciplinary approach reflects the professional uses of these mediums and their significance in contemporary art.
Our deliberately limited class sizes create an environment conducive to technical and conceptual exploration, enabling instructors to offer both collective and personalized guidance to students immersed in photographic discourse. This approach empowers students to develop self-directed projects while engaging with broader artistic conversations, positioning their work not just alongside other photographers and filmmakers, but also in dialogue with creators across diverse disciplines.
Alumni have established careers in commercial photography, archival work, photo editing, and design, or have continued their education at top-tier graduate institutions across the country.
