The Mathematics Department provides academic programs that culminate in Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees, as well as Master of Science (MS), Master of Arts (MA), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. (For specific information about graduate programs, consult the Graduate Bulletin.) High-achieving undergraduates, particularly those with advanced credits, may opt for an accelerated bachelor's/master's track, enabling them to complete both degrees in approximately five years. A mathematics degree serves either as the cornerstone of a well-rounded liberal arts education or as a stepping stone to advanced studies in mathematics or other disciplines. Graduates can explore opportunities in business, finance, public service, or educational roles at secondary and post-secondary levels. The Actuarial Science program specifically prepares students for careers in insurance and financial industries.
Mathematics forms the essential backbone of scientific, social scientific, and technological fields. Mathematics graduates can anticipate professional opportunities in corporate, financial, or government settings, as well as teaching positions across educational levels. Alternatively, the department's degrees can serve as the intellectual centerpiece of a liberal arts education, either as an end in itself or as preparation for specialized study in other professions. The Biomathematics track specifically prepares students for medical school admission.
