The English Department provides a curriculum that forms the core of a contemporary liberal arts education. As one of the most extensive degree programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, the English undergraduate major enables students to focus on literature, media, and culture; creative writing; or editing, writing, and media. Students can also explore specialized options like honors programs, business-focused English studies, or independent research projects. Beyond fostering intellectual development, the English major equips students with practical skills for careers in education, professional writing, law, business, religious leadership, and various government roles at local, state, and federal levels.
The advising office invites you to explore our undergraduate English programs. Among the largest departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, we offer three primary concentrations: Literature, Media, and Culture; Creative Writing; and Editing, Writing, and Media. Additional opportunities include Honors programs and customized independent study options.

Freshman admission is a holistic and selective process, and no single criterion guarantees admission. Rather, we consider all the documentation you submit, and we carefully review your academic record and test scores to ensure that you are prepared for the rigorous curriculum you will encounter at Florida State University.
The courses listed below represent the minimum required for admission consideration:
4 English courses, at least three with substantial writing requirements
4 mathematics courses at the Algebra I level and higher
3 natural science courses, at least two with laboratory experience
3 social science courses
2 sequential courses of a world language or American Sign Language
2 elective courses, preferably in the above subject areas
The following are the minimum scores required for admission to the University, although some departments require higher scores at the graduate level:
Internet based TOEFL (IBTOEFL): 80
Paper based TOEFL (TOEFL): 550
International English Language Testing System (Academic IELTS): 6.5
Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 77
Pearson Test of English (PTE): 55
