The Department of Modern Languages provides diverse options for higher education. Its graduate studies in Hispanic Literature aim to develop exceptional academics and educators. The Spanish Master of Arts program covers literature from Spain, Latin America, and U.S. Hispanic writers.
New students receive guidance from an assigned academic advisor. To complete the M.A. program, candidates must successfully pass both written and oral comprehensive exams after finishing their coursework.

Qualification Requirements

To be admitted into the Master's degree program, a student must:
Hold a Bachelor's degree in Spanish from an accredited university or college. Special cases, such as holders of a degree in a related field, will be evaluated individually by the Graduate Committee.
Have attained a minimum 3.0 grade point average, during the last two years of her/his undergraduate program as determined by the FIU Graduate Admissions Office.
The items listed below MUST be submitted to FIU Graduate Admissions office:
Two letters of recommendation from former professors in the format required by the Graduate Studies Committee
A resume or CV
A statement of purpose in English, addressing the candidate's goals and objectives in pursuing graduate studies in Spanish
A research paper on literary analysis in Spanish. The paper must follow the MLA style and must include an original argument with an explanation of the text (min. 7 pages not including bibliography)

International students must demonstrate native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and advanced proficiency in English. International graduate student applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A total score of 80 on the iBT TOEFL or 6.5 overall on the IELTS is required. The official TOEFL score must be sent directly by Educational Testing Service (ETS). A 60-second video submission, in Spanish, where you introduce yourself and explain why you want to pursue a graduate degree. Creativity is welcome, but no more than 60 seconds!
