Differing from conventional MA programs that emphasize literary history, IU's MA in English concentrates on practical applications of English studies, with specializations in teaching and editing. Our MA program offers adaptable study plans: just eight credit hours of required core courses, with the rest being electives customized to your objectives and interests. Opt for either a thesis track (36 credits) or a non-thesis path (40 credits), focusing on literature, writing, or linguistics. This program equips you for diverse careers—editors, educators, professors, arts administrators, authors, and researchers. A recent alum now writes for the New York Times, while another serves as an acquisitions editor at Random House. Our MA graduates have secured roles as journal editors, managing editors, marketing and communications specialists, and other positions with leading publications and firms. At least nine recent graduates are currently enrolled in Ph.D. or M.F.A. programs.
The English M.A. requires either 36 or 40 credit hours, based on your selected option:
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), or the equivalent, in the student’s undergraduate major, documented by an official transcript.
Recommended minimum scores for applicants who are nonnative speakers of English: 100 TOEFL iBT; 7.0 IELTS.
