FIU's Environmental Chemistry program educates chemists through the renowned Institute of Environment, covering specialized fields like aquatic chemistry, extended ecological studies, coastal ocean dynamics, and rising sea levels.
This concentration builds upon the Institute of Environment's research excellence in aquatic chemistry, sustained environmental observation, sea level changes, and related disciplines. Through targeted studies and hands-on research, students gain deep knowledge in both environmental science and chemistry, equipping them for careers across industrial, governmental, and academic sectors.
Research initiatives involve analyzing biogeochemical cycles of critical trace elements like mercury and arsenic, investigating hydrocarbon distribution in ancient sediments via SFC extraction, analyzing atmospheric molecules and airborne particles, breaking down organophosphates through photocatalysis, and detecting free radicals in stressed samples using spin trapping techniques.

Biomedical investigations focus on creating biologically significant compounds to study enzyme functions, computational modeling of protease enzyme active sites, and exploring how diet affects macular pigment composition.
