The Guitar Studio Program provides students with diverse opportunities to cultivate essential skills as they progress toward becoming accomplished professional musicians. Alongside weekly one-on-one instruction, participants engage with the FIU Miami Guitar Orchestra (FIUMGO), showcase their talents in recurring guitar forums, take part in guitar literature courses, and learn from visiting artists through masterclasses.
The guitar forums serve as a platform for students to present newly acquired solo and ensemble pieces. Experts also deliver lectures covering diverse subjects including technical skills, artistic interpretation, practice strategies, memorization techniques, sound amplification, recording processes, competition preparation, and professional development. The FIUMGO focuses on enhancing ensemble abilities, strengthening sight-reading proficiency, offering conductor collaboration experience, and presenting varied repertoire in both campus and external performance spaces, notably during the Miami International GuitART Festival.
Guitar Literature classes explore the instrument's historical evolution and repertoire from Renaissance to contemporary periods. Students acquire skills for transcribing early tablatures (French, Italian, and German) into modern notation, study historical performance approaches, and examine influential guitar composers' impact on the instrument's artistic legacy through textbooks, supplementary materials, audio recordings, and group discussions.
