Ocean engineering is an interdisciplinary domain focused on addressing engineering challenges in marine settings and responsibly utilizing oceanic resources.
These professionals create, construct, manage, and service vessels, offshore installations, and diverse marine technologies such as aircraft carriers, submarines, sailboats, tankers, tugboats, yachts, oil platforms, underwater robots, and acoustic sonar systems.
They analyze marine conditions to understand impacts of waves, currents, and saltwater on maritime vessels and structures, devising techniques and materials to endure wave energy and prevent corrosion. Ocean engineers also contribute to designing and operating crewed and remote-controlled submersibles for deep-sea investigation and resource extraction. Notably, Dr. Robert Ballard, an ocean engineer, discovered the Titanic's remains.
