The non-thesis alternative modifies the standard Master of Science program by substituting the six-credit thesis requirement with a research initiative plus two guided electives, along with written and oral comprehensive final assessments developed and overseen by the student's advisory committee. The substitute courses, chosen jointly by the student and their committee with the Graduate Coordinator's approval, exclude supervised research or thesis work. These supplementary courses enable students to concentrate their graduate studies in specialized areas deemed valuable for their career growth. A single exception requires students to complete one credit of supervised research during their final term specifically for undertaking their comprehensive assessments. These evaluations allow the committee to evaluate the student's professional capabilities and ensure all graduates meet uniform proficiency standards. With committee and coordinator approval, these exit exams may incorporate a multi-term research project, giving non-thesis students practical research experience.
