Students pursuing MS and PhD degrees in this discipline create a customized program aligned with their specific objectives, guided by a faculty advisory committee with relevant expertise. Alongside research, students are urged to participate in teaching, extension services, and community engagement. The program mandates one additional committee member for both M.S. and Ph.D. candidates (three for M.S., four for Ph.D.) beyond Graduate School requirements, with at least one member from a department different from the chair's. Applicants in Animal Science can specialize in areas such as Animal Nutrition, Animal Science, Reproductive Physiology, Animal Genetics, or Animal Genomics. Faculty expertise covers diverse aspects of domestic animal physiology and management to improve health and efficiency. Research focuses include nutrition, metabolism, growth, reproduction, genetics, immunology, disease control, and systems analysis. The program also emphasizes innovative technologies for monitoring animal behavior and physiology to boost productivity and welfare, supporting sustainable animal agriculture and food systems. Students can collaborate with research teams exploring sustainable production methods and solutions for environmental challenges like climate change.
The Animal Science Department provides undergraduate and graduate education in the biology and care of food, laboratory, and companion animals. Our research initiatives enhance knowledge of animal biology while tackling current challenges in animal industries. We aim to innovate methods and generate insights that advance animal welfare, agriculture, and human health. Our globally renowned faculty specialize in animal management, breeding, genetics, physiology, nutrition, growth biology, and microbiology.
Preference is given to applicants whose credentials indicate strong undergraduate preparation both in the animal sciences and in related biological and physical sciences.
