The American Religious Cultures (ARC) program leverages Emory University's extensive resources for exploring religion and culture in America. This graduate-level curriculum enables students to investigate American religious traditions through sociological, historical, theological, and cultural lenses. Key focus areas encompass the development of Christianity in America, African American religious traditions, America's religious pluralism, cultural studies, lived religion, the sociology of religion, and religion in popular culture.
Participants in this program analyze religious beliefs and practices within their cultural frameworks—viewing them as fundamental aspects of cultural formation rather than as separate phenomena. This exploration occurs through courses examining historical developments, diverse methodologies, and America's religious landscape. Incoming students are advised to enroll in at least two historical period seminars and two theory/methodology courses in religious studies.
