Emory's Comparative Literature Department provides Ph.D. candidates with an expansive theoretical and interdisciplinary program designed to equip them for research and teaching that transcends conventional academic boundaries while questioning the very concept of literature. Our approach emphasizes the unique characteristics of literary and linguistic forms, highlighting how literariness and the 'literary' contribute to innovative thought in the humanities and other fields. At Emory, Comparative Literature connects the classic objectives of the discipline—analyzing literature across cultures—with insights from Philosophy, Psychoanalysis, and other fields. We also value the study of diverse language systems, including digital and symbolic languages important in scientific and technological advancements. The Department fosters cross-disciplinary theoretical inquiry while maintaining a sharp focus on language's complexities and expressive potential. In all our academic pursuits, literature acts as a foundational element for examining the complexities inherent in comparative analysis.
