Our Rhetoric & Composition program stands as the most extensive in the Southeast, featuring eight dedicated faculty experts in rhetoric, composition, digital media, communication, writing center theories, pedagogies, and language studies.

Through our unique curriculum, students can explore diverse interests spanning historical periods, contemporary composition studies, rhetorical theory, visual and digital rhetoric, emerging media, advanced academic writing, language studies, writing center research, writing program administration, and professional writing. Georgia State University is the sole institution in Georgia providing such comprehensive graduate studies in rhetoric and composition. Graduate students gain valuable internship experiences with departmental publications, nonprofits, and Atlanta organizations, along with mentorship and training in writing instruction and program leadership.

Exclusive to Georgia State, our Lower Division Studies program provides teaching and mentorship opportunities for graduate students serving as instructors for First-Year Composition and Sophomore Literature Survey courses.

The Writing Across the Curriculum initiative supports faculty development by promoting student-centered, active teaching methods to enhance writing and communication skills throughout undergraduate studies. Participating faculty have notably advanced the scholarship of teaching and learning.
