The Classical Languages PhD program is tailored for students holding an external MA in Classical Languages or a comparable discipline. This advanced study emphasizes the linguistic and literary traditions of ancient Greece and Rome, equipping graduates for university-level teaching and research positions in Classical Studies and allied disciplines.

Minimum 15 seminar (8000) level credit hours
Residency requirement: Either two 9-hour semesters or three 6-hour semesters completed within an 18-month period at MU

Qualification Requirements

Applications to our Classical Arts and Humanities programs should include

a 500word statement of interest which should include a project proposal statement indicating how you intend to pursue AMS from an interdisciplinary perspective
a 10-20 page writing sample OR a portfolio of work in the arts
transcripts from all colleges-universities attended
3 letters of recommendation


Have earned a qualifying bachelors degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
Have earned at least a 3.0 Grade Point Average in the last 60 hours of baccalaureate coursework required for applicants with less than a graduate certificate graduate degree or professional degree.
TOEFL Internet-based - 80 Overall - Reading - 17, Listening - 17, Speaking - 17, Writing - 17.
