The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.) program at ETSU aims to develop skilled practitioners and nurse scientists who can conduct impactful research to enhance healthcare and assume leadership roles in health systems. Program graduates will address the growing demand for nurse educators and researchers in academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and complex medical systems throughout the region and country.
This Ph.D. program equips students with specialized expertise in nursing science, focusing particularly on applying this knowledge to benefit rural and underserved communities. Students must develop proficiency in research methodologies, data analysis techniques, and gain problem-solving abilities to navigate social, ethical, cultural, economic, and political challenges in nursing, healthcare education, and research. The program structure includes studies in scientific philosophy, ethics, statistics, research design, nursing theory, and specialized coursework in a chosen concentration area. Designed for working professionals, the program uses a hybrid/online delivery model with mandatory intensive sessions each semester. Completion requires a dissertation on a chosen research topic.
