The Department of History offers hands-on learning through co-op positions in archives, museums, and historical sites, along with opportunities to perform and showcase original research and visit important historical locations. The program excels in the History of Science, Technology, and the Environment (STE) as well as Global History, which is evident in its curriculum.
Their STE-focused courses align with Drexel's emphasis on applied science and technological innovation, mirroring the dynamic interdisciplinary shifts in historical studies. Global History classes expose students to transnational themes like the Worldwide Flow of People, Ideas, and Goods, Conflicts Over Energy and Security, and Environmental Challenges and Climate Shifts. Learners can merge scientific understanding with global awareness and cultural proficiency while developing essential liberal arts skills—strong written and spoken communication, research proficiency, critical thinking, and the capacity to tackle complex issues and explore significant inquiries.
History students also benefit from travel-based courses that enhance learning through direct experience. These programs include domestic or international trips lasting 1-2 weeks after coursework concludes, enabling students to expand their research and analysis beyond traditional classroom settings.
