As English majors, students explore diverse texts across various time periods, regions, genres, and literary traditions. They select a specialized focus within the major (Literature Emphasis, Creative Writing Emphasis, or Writing and Communication Studies Minor) to deepen their expertise. The program cultivates adaptable thinking, linguistic sensitivity, global awareness, and understanding of diversity (including gender, race, class, ability, religion, and nationality) - skills applicable to numerous post-graduate paths.
If you're passionate about language, cherish creativity, and aspire to follow in your favorite authors' footsteps - perhaps even publishing your own work - the Creative Writing concentration offers studies in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and drama. You'll engage in extensive reading, analyze writing techniques, create original works, and develop constructive critique skills through peer workshops.
