The TEACH Program merges an undergraduate History major (or another disciplinary focus) from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (LAS) with a Master of Education (MEd) from the College of Education (COE). Graduates earn both a BS in their chosen CSH major and an MEd in Education, along with an Illinois Professional Educator License featuring a history endorsement.
This program blends subject-area expertise with educational theory and teaching methods. Key components include the Junior Year Experiential Course, Senior Capstone Course, and three dual-counted undergraduate/graduate classes, ensuring a smooth progression from undergraduate to graduate studies and from major coursework to teacher preparation. Undergraduate major requirements can be found on the respective program's website.
The fifth-year master's coursework expands on undergraduate learning through interconnected classes with extensive field placements, culminating in student teaching during the final spring term. The COE's Department of Teacher Education oversees the Junior Year Experiential Course, Capstone Course, and graduate-level classes. These experiences connect academic content with teaching practice, covering human development, diverse learners, secondary education, pedagogical research, educational contexts, and curriculum design. Participants reflect critically on their teaching growth while gaining hands-on experience through school and community placements. Graduates demonstrate their alignment with COE's core values—social justice, transformative pedagogy, and Vincentian principles—through professional portfolios.
