The Japanese Studies (JPS) program at DePaul immerses students in Japanese language and cultural studies, fostering an understanding of historical, linguistic, and ethical principles while equipping them with leadership skills for careers in business, arts, diplomacy, education, and digital media.
As America's key Asian ally, Japan boasts the world's third-largest economy, ranks as the second-biggest U.S. business investor, and leads globally in digital media and consumer products. DePaul's interdisciplinary curriculum covers Japanese literature, history, religion, art, ethics, political science, business, anime, and film. Students gain valuable language and translation expertise while refining critical analysis and writing abilities through specialized courses in Japanese ethics, environmental studies, gender studies, and visual culture. JPS enhances learning through immersive experiences, including semester or year-long exchanges in Osaka (Kansai Gaidai) and Kyoto (Ritsumeikan), plus annual faculty-led programs like Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Studies, Okinawan Diaspora and Politics, and Tokyo-Kyoto Digital Media initiatives.
