Dartmouth's Studio Art program provides an immersive, in-depth study of visual arts creation. Students examine technical skills, visual perception, and artistic expression within both historical and modern frameworks. The curriculum is designed to foster hands-on interaction with various artistic mediums. To complete the Studio Art major, students take 10 courses spanning architecture, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. While Drawing I serves as a foundation for Painting I and advanced sculpture/drawing classes, no prerequisites exist for introductory courses in drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, or Special Topics. Advanced sculpture students gain access to welding facilities. All participants must complete mandatory woodshop safety training at the Hopkins Center Student Woodworking Workshop and receive certification (Grey Card) prior to using equipment. Sculpture students may also utilize ceramics, jewelry, and woodworking facilities at the Hopkins Center for specific projects.
