Comparative Literature is an interdisciplinary field that encourages analyzing literary works across languages while exploring connections between literature and other human endeavors. It combines detailed linguistic analysis with broader investigations into how literature interacts with various disciplines, including visual and performing arts, philosophy, history, social sciences, religion, and STEM fields. The program focuses on comparing literary traditions across eras and transcending national or regional borders. It critically examines both Western and non-Western traditions while addressing evolving concepts of canonicity and marginalized voices. Students gain exposure to diverse critical approaches, such as rhetoric and poetics, translation studies, film and media theory, colonial and postcolonial discourse, identity theories, gender and queer studies, and psychoanalysis. Majors are required to achieve proficiency in at least one foreign language and engage with primary texts in multiple languages.
