The plant breeding discipline welcomes students passionate about enhancing crops within worldwide agricultural systems. Faculty investigations span practical breeding of key crops like grains, pasture plants, potatoes, and various fruits and vegetables, alongside exploring molecular genetics and crop genomics. The hands-on breeding initiative focuses on creating plant varieties with improved productivity, disease resilience, adaptability, and quality, while also examining breeding techniques and theories. Molecular and biochemical research aims to pinpoint and extract agriculturally significant genes, connecting data from model organisms to crop genomes, analyzing genetic variations across species, and creating computational tools for crop enhancement. Studies also explore preservation and evolutionary genetics of cultivated plants and their wild counterparts. Numerous faculty integrate both practical breeding and molecular research in their work.
Baccalaureate degree from a college or university of recognized standing.
A strong background in biology is preferable, but occasionally, students are admitted with other types of experience.
