Students must develop comprehensive expertise in their chosen field, gaining strong theoretical, conceptual, and practical understanding of their primary subject. They should demonstrate methodological, linguistic, and research capabilities necessary for independent academic work, along with completing at least one semester as a teaching assistant. Those without equivalent prior coursework must complete three out of four major field seminars. Various interdisciplinary options exist, such as the Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research, Peace Studies Program, Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, and regional studies programs. Upon enrollment, doctoral candidates receive an interim advisor. During their second year, students form a provisional Special Committee to oversee their academic progress, help prepare for qualifying exams, and assist with field papers when needed. By the third year, students establish their permanent Special Committee to guide them through the A exam and subsequent dissertation research.
