Ph.D. applicants choose one primary specialization within their discipline along with two secondary areas from different fields. The Ph.D. program doesn't mandate a specific number of course credits. Before graduating, doctoral candidates must present at least one research seminar and participate in teaching for a minimum of one term. Along with Graduate School examinations, Ph.D. students must pass a qualifying exam before their second semester begins. The program offers outstanding graduate research opportunities in both theoretical and practical areas. While all coursework occurs on the Ithaca campus, research may be conducted either there or at Geneva's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station.
