The independent major provides a unique opportunity for students whose academic goals cannot be fulfilled through existing standard majors. This pathway enables students to design a customized, interdisciplinary program of study. Students develop their curriculum in collaboration with faculty advisors, requiring approval from the Independent Major Committee, which oversees their academic progress. Important notice: Because of current enrollment constraints and advising capacity, the independent major cannot accommodate students focusing on Computer Science as either their primary or secondary field. Cornell Engineering provides one of the world's most comprehensive engineering curricula, featuring 14 distinct majors and 21 minors. As a first-year student, you'll start with general engineering coursework following our common curriculum. This foundation helps you discover all available majors at Cornell Engineering, giving you the chance to explore various options before declaring your major during sophomore year.
