Participants in this program are advised to pursue challenging chemistry and physics coursework along with completing at least three math semesters. Advanced courses welcome both upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, with semesterly one-credit biochemistry seminars available. As biochemistry thrives on experimentation, students are motivated to undertake independent research with faculty guidance. Conducting research allows students to develop specialized knowledge while experiencing hands-on scientific methodology. Faculty laboratories employ diverse techniques across numerous projects, exploring areas like gene regulation, cellular transformation, membrane dynamics, protein architecture, energy conversion processes, and chromosomal organization. Research utilizes various biological systems including viruses, microorganisms, cultured cells, and plants. Many Biochemistry graduates advance to postgraduate studies in academia, medicine, or veterinary sciences.
