Within the College of Arts & Sciences, students can select from existing majors or opt to create a personalized course of study through the independent major program. Although independent majors require interdisciplinary approaches, numerous traditional majors in Arts & Sciences also incorporate studies across multiple disciplines. It's important to thoroughly explore available options before concluding that your academic interests don't align with existing departments or majors. Those pursuing an independent major will collaborate with program directors and faculty in their chosen fields to craft and perfect their proposal, which then undergoes review by a faculty committee. Recent examples of independent majors include: Computing, Cognition & Aesthetics: Combining computer science, psychology, art history, cognitive studies, and information science Latin American History and Literature: Integrating Spanish, history, government, and Romance studies Space Policy: Merging astronomy, earth sciences, physics, policy analysis, and government Cultural Food Studies: Blending anthropology, psychology, food science, hospitality management, and science studies Environmental Policy and Law: Uniting history, government, science studies, economics, natural resources, and biology Biological Illustration: Fusing biology, art history, and studio art
