Data science is a rapidly growing, interdisciplinary field that integrates knowledge from multiple areas. While its precise scope continues to develop, key characteristics of data science involve: systematic data visualization and examination; prioritizing reproducible and repeatable research; effectively sharing findings; and fostering collaborative, cross-disciplinary work. The Public Health Data Science (PHDS) specialization maintains fundamental biostatistics training while incorporating contemporary statistical learning techniques, transparent coding practices, and data handling skills. This 36-credit program's duration depends on each student's prior education and experience, with most finishing in two years (four semesters), typically starting in fall. Beyond coursework, PHDS candidates undertake a practicum and capstone project, allowing them to implement classroom knowledge in practical settings and explore potential career paths.
