Over the past twenty years, while fundamental sciences have progressed significantly, patient-focused research continues to rely heavily on clinical and translational studies - and the researchers who conduct them. Answering the National Institutes of Health's push for better training of clinical and translational scientists in academic medicine, Columbia established the MS in Patient-Oriented Research (MS-POR) in 1999. This collaborative program involves the schools of public health, medicine, nursing, dentistry, and arts and sciences. The MS-POR equips emerging scientists with the skills needed for independent clinical research careers and enhances their competitiveness for research grants by teaching core clinical investigation principles. This two-year, 30-credit master's program features specialized interdisciplinary courses and seminars, some created specifically for MS-POR students. The program focuses on rigorous quantitative methods, analytical reasoning, and practical approaches to tackle the multifaceted issues in clinical research.
