The Department promotes research into Japanese history spanning all eras. Our faculty specialize in diverse areas such as ancient Japanese scripts, gender and cultural studies of early-modern and modern Japan, 19th-century historical developments, and the complex relationships between empire, expansion, conflict, and remembrance in contemporary Japanese history. Students pursuing graduate studies in Japanese history join the History-East Asia program, with applications accepted through either EALAC or the History Department.

All students must submit one transcript showing courses and grades per school attended, a Statement of Academic Purpose, a writing sample and three letters of evaluation from academic sources.
