The School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SLLC) provides Missouri's sole state-university Master of Arts program in German studies.
Our program draws a varied group of M.A. applicants from throughout the U.S. and internationally, with typical cohorts blending both American and overseas students.
This graduate program equips students pursuing German language, literature, and cultural studies for diverse professional paths:
educational careers domestically and internationally
doctoral studies in German Studies, Jewish Studies, Applied Linguistics/Second-Language Acquisition, and related interdisciplinary areas
global commerce, media, and legal professions
travel and hospitality industries
public sector and diplomatic careers
During the two-year curriculum, students typically enroll in three graduate courses per term. Some classes address professional development, such as our language-teaching methods seminar and introduction to cultural studies research. The majority of instruction concentrates on specialized topics spanning German Studies' historical range, from medieval times to contemporary postmodern works. By analyzing literature, cinema, and theoretical texts, participants engage with current scholarly debates while building foundational knowledge of Germany's cultural heritage.
