The History Department provides an extensive PhD program covering nearly all regions and eras of global history. This diverse academic environment allows students to deeply explore their chosen specialization while developing comparative understanding across related disciplines. Graduates of our doctoral program secure teaching positions at leading universities worldwide and pursue careers in government, publishing, and other history-related fields. Specializations encompass African, Ancient, Atlantic World, Early Modern European (1350-1750), East Asian, Sociomedical Sciences, International/Global, Jewish, Latin American, Medieval European, Middle Eastern, Modern European, South Asian, and U.S. history.
In addition to the requirements listed below, all students must submit one transcript showing courses and grades per school attended, a statement of academic purpose, a writing sample (a course paper, term paper, etc.), a personal statement, and three letters of recommendation from academic sources.
