The Department of History provides graduate programs awarding Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Additionally, through partnerships with the College of Information Studies and the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, the department offers combined Master of Arts degrees in History and Library Science, as well as History and Historic Preservation. MA and PhD candidates can specialize in various disciplines including Ancient Mediterranean studies, Medieval history, Early Modern and Modern Europe, Global Interaction and Exchange, International relations, Jewish studies, Latin American history, Middle Eastern studies, Russian & Eurasian affairs, Technology, Science, & Environment, US history, and Women & Gender studies. The MA program exclusively covers African and Military history. With over fifty faculty members and around 150 graduate students, the program particularly shines in African-American studies, US history, and Middle Eastern studies. Other strong areas include Western and Central European history, Russian and Eurasian studies, Ancient Mediterranean civilizations, Latin American history, and Women & Gender studies. Emerging fields gaining faculty expertise and student interest include Atlantic history, African diaspora studies, and Global Interaction and Exchange.
Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland
overall grade point average is 3.50 for admission to the doctoral program
