Columbia University's Mechanical Engineering Department undergraduate program cultivates students into innovative problem-solvers while developing essential teamwork, leadership, and communication abilities needed to excel in mechanical engineering and diverse fields including medicine, law, consulting, management, and finance.
Our distinctive curriculum delivers comprehensive training in mathematics, fundamental and applied sciences, and humanities through Columbia's renowned Core Curriculum. The B.S. degree includes 27 nontechnical credits, enabling students to select electives from both the engineering school and Columbia College. Undergraduates can choose from an extensive catalog of courses across the college and school.
From their initial semester, students engage in engineering design projects, participate in collaborative research initiatives, and broaden their perspectives through Columbia's celebrated Core Curriculum.
Undergraduates enjoy multiple opportunities to collaborate with distinguished faculty in classrooms and laboratories, where professors conduct cutting-edge interdisciplinary research. Students can pursue both semester-long and full-time summer research positions. Additionally, they join campus chapters of organizations like ASME, Solar-Splash, SAE, Engineers Without Borders, and AIAA.
Applicants must present evidence that they are prepared for college work in the humanities, mathematics, social sciences, foreign languages and natural sciences. Accordingly, the College strongly recommends the following preparation: Four years of English literature and composition
The vast majority of successful applicants to the College have taken five academic courses per term for all four years of secondary/high school. Student must have 650 or higher on either the Critical Reasoning or Writing sections of the SAT, 700 or higher on the Evidence Based Reading and Writing section of the redesigned SAT and 29 or higher on the English or Reading sections of the ACT
English Language Requirement
Applicant must have minimum score of 600 (paper-based test) or 100 (Internet-based test) and minimum IELTS score of 7.0
