The Slavic Department at Barnard has a core objective: to equip students linguistically, culturally, and academically for meaningful engagement with the global community, particularly the Slavic-speaking regions. In collaboration with Columbia University, the department provides instruction in five Slavic languages and their literatures, with Russian as the primary focus. Emphasizing rigorous language training, the department ensures students are well-prepared for future interactions with Eastern Europe and Eurasia, advanced studies in regional literature, anthropology, sociology, history, economics, or politics, as well as careers in government, business, journalism, or international law.
Students can pursue majors in Russian Language and Literature, Slavic and East European Literature and Culture, Russian Regional Studies, or Slavic and East European Regional Studies, along with a minor in Russian Literature and Culture. These programs feature diverse courses aimed at developing conversational and written fluency, as well as the ability to analyze complex texts across disciplines. While providing a broad foundation in Russian and Slavic literature, film, culture, and intellectual history, the department encourages students to enhance their understanding through interdisciplinary courses on Russia, the former Soviet Union, and Eastern Europe. Additionally, it supports student involvement in regional events at the Harriman Institute and Columbia's Slavic Department while promoting engagement with New York City's vibrant cultural offerings.
