The Modern European Studies focus in the interdisciplinary undergraduate Major (IDS – MES) pursues two key objectives. Initially, it enables students to examine Europe as a geographical area through an interdisciplinary lens that combines regional and linguistic studies. Additionally, by mandating two extra semesters of language instruction beyond CLAS's two-semester language prerequisite, learners can achieve intermediate-level language competency. Participants may also take part in study abroad opportunities connected to CES initiatives and wider European Studies.
The IDS-MES major's prerequisites align with those of existing CLAS IDS specializations. Admission to the program requires a 3.0 GPA and endorsement from the CLAS IDS committee. Upon acceptance, students must choose two UF faculty advisors from distinct departments (with at least one being a CLAS member) to oversee their primary and secondary guidance. Under these advisors' supervision, students must complete a senior thesis. This research project (IDS 4906 Interdisciplinary Thesis Research) demands a minimum of 7 credit hours.
