The Department of French and Romance Philology provides undergraduate programs in both French and French/Francophone studies. Those focused on literary studies may prefer the French major, while students drawn to Francophone cultures, history, and civilization might choose the French and Francophone studies track.
The French major develops comprehensive knowledge of France's language, literature, and cultural traditions. Following foundational language coursework, students advance through grammar and composition classes to hone their French proficiency. The mandatory two-semester survey (FREN UN3333-FREN UN3334) traces French literature's evolution from medieval times to modernity. Beyond these core requirements, majors can personalize their studies through diverse electives in language, literature, and cultural studies. Small class sizes foster mentorship opportunities with faculty. Upper-level courses covering French cinema, philosophy, and historical texts help students refine analytical abilities and textual interpretation methods.
The program culminates in a senior seminar that integrates prior learning through diverse texts and critical frameworks. Students may optionally undertake a faculty-guided senior thesis to gain research experience, which is required for departmental honors consideration.
