The French department faculty are dedicated to ensuring their majors achieve advanced competency in five key language domains: oral communication, auditory comprehension, reading, writing, and cultural literacy. In today's increasingly interconnected world, graduates entering the workforce with foreign language proficiency gain undeniable advantages. French distinguishes itself among language choices through its significance in medicine, technology, international relations, and business sectors, coupled with the enduring appeal of its cultural prestige among new learners. Through comprehensive training across all five skill areas, we equip students to thrive in diverse French-language contexts, while maintaining our historic commitment to preparing future educators for secondary and higher education French programs.
Students will develop the ability to:
interpret and analyze French literary works and cultural materials. Graduates should attain Advanced-level reading comprehension (meeting ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines standards of Advanced or Advanced-Plus).
achieve spoken French proficiency at Intermediate Mid to Intermediate High levels.
produce academic papers in French demonstrating Advanced-level writing skills (Advanced Low, Mid or High according to ACTFL Writing Proficiency Guidelines).
To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school. You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno.
Verification of having met the English requirement through one of the following options: TOEFL score 61+; IELTS (must be academic version) with a score of 6.0+; Duolingo English Exam score 95+; Cambridge score of B2+.
