As the most widely spoken Slavic language and the most geographically extensive language across Eurasia, Russian offers a gateway to one of the world's great literary traditions and cultural heritages. The Russian degree program immerses students in both the language and its historical development, including seminal works from 19th and 20th century literature. The curriculum also examines modern Russian society, with discussions about Slavic cultures, Russian traditions, and diverse communities within Russia and former Soviet states fostering cultural awareness, intercultural competence, and global citizenship.
At UNH, Russian studies extend beyond traditional classroom learning. Students typically participate in summer or semester abroad programs in Russia and have access to internship opportunities. The program emphasizes practical applications of Russian language skills in professional contexts while maintaining close faculty mentorship. Outside formal instruction, students often join the Russian Club for regular gatherings featuring traditional tea and cultural activities. Many Russian majors choose to combine their studies with a second major in fields like business administration or international relations.
Each student must have their official high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.
