All majors are encouraged to gain foundational understanding in three out of anthropology's four core disciplines (social/linguistic anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology) along with their interconnectedness. Students should plan their coursework in collaboration with their advisor shortly after declaring the major, with regular advisory meetings strongly recommended.
Anthropology explores how cultural frameworks shape human cognition, behavior, and societal understanding. In today's rapidly changing world of cultural exchange, migration, and idea circulation, we investigate emerging social patterns and the resulting interactions and tensions. Barnard's Anthropology program equips students with fresh perspectives for interpreting our world, appreciating diversity, and thinking globally while remaining grounded in daily human experiences. Faculty research encompasses: religious practices, media's societal impact, globalization trends, environmental conservation, medical anthropology, technological influences, tourism economics, visual/material culture studies, and language's role in shaping identity and daily interactions.
